Blogging 101: Write to Your Dream Reader

Dream Reader?  All that comes to mind is “Dream Weaver”.

Sorry, I guess I’m dating myself.  But at the time, it was one of my favorite songs.  I remember my first clock radio, pre-digital, the numbers were on a spindle and flipped over every minute.  It was an obnoxiously noisy thing, and the bulb used to light the numbers was too bright, so I taped an index card over it. I had to lift it up to see the time.

The device also had a sleep timer for the radio, its maximum time was 3 hours.  I used the timer to drown out the thumping of the numbers flipping over, and the music helped me fall asleep.  Sometimes I would wake up before the timer turned off the music, and it seemed to me that I would always wake up around the same time, within a few minutes, and the same song played.  Dream Weaver by Gary Wright was one of those, and Fly Like an Eagle by The Steve Miller Band, or Hotel California by the Eagles.

So, just for fun, I decided to look up the top 100 songs from 1976 and 1977.  While I recognized and could recall the words and tunes to most of them, those three stand out in my mind as being the songs I heard at night.

Another humorous tidbit, at least I think so, is it was about that time that I started listening to country music.  I remember the moment exactly as the rock radio station I listened to while sewing changed its format to country.  I was jamming along with the foot pedal floored, and couldn’t figure out what to what I was listening.  I jumped up furiously to change the station, grumbling to myself, thinking my mom had changed it.  However, when the song ended, I discovered the dial had not been turned (yes radios still had dials instead of digital tuners),and the stations call letters were the same as my beloved rock station.  Franticly I tried to tune in another rock station, but sadly, that station was the only one that came in clearly in the sewing room.  Thus my conversion to country.

Of course I still enjoy listening to the songs of my youth, even if I don’t always remember the correct words.
